Government&politicalHong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. Following British rule from 1842 to 1997, China assumed sovereignty under the 'one country, two systems' principle. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's constitutional document, the Basic Law, ensures that the current political situation will remain in effect for 50 years. The rights and freedoms of people in Hong Kong are based on the impartial rule of law and an independent judiciary. After the handover the first chief executive was Tung chee hwa and with now Leung chun ying. The government is divided into 3 branches:executive, legislative and judiciary.The purpose for separating the 3 powers is to act as checks and balance and also to prevent abuse of power. For judiciary, the highest court is the final court of appeal.

Legislative council election process:
The legislative council election will be hold every 4 years and the council consist of 70 members, with 35 returned by geographical constituencies through direct election and 35 by functional constituencies representing different sectors of the community. It is separated to 5 districts: Hong Kong Island(7 seats), Kowloon east(5 seats), Kowloon west(5 seats), New territories east(9 seats) and New territories west (9 seats). District council election process: The election of district council would hold every 4 years and the first term began in 2000, under the district councillor appointment system 104 out of 534 members are appointed by the chief executive, the remainders are democratically elected by voters in each district . Chief executive election process: The election for chief executive election would hold every 5 years, in Hong Kong there are in total 3.5 million registered voters. only 249,499 of the voters had voting rights to form the 1200 members election committee. These are mostly the representative of various business, industries sectors and representatives from the Hong Kong and mainland china political bodies to form 4 uneven groups.
